Course Description and Expectations: Keyboarding is a prerequisite for this course. The purpose of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to explore a variety of careers, and learn the skills and competencies needed for success in the workplace. Students will prepare a portfolio that includes a resume, cover letter, job application and a thank you letter that will prepare them for applying for a job. Students will also learn about checking accounts, savings accounts, credit cards, insurance and investing for retirement.

Grading Policy: 5% Daily opening quiz or question, 20% Portfolio, 35% class work and homework, and 40% tests.

Final Exam Weighting: Final Exam counts as 1/3 of total course grade.

Late Work Policy:
Class work and homework graded at 50% if one day late, 25% if two days late. No credit after 2 days.

Test makeup policy:
Tests and homework must be made up withing 2 days of return. For long term absence student must confer with teacher.

Extra Credit:
No extra credit available.

Introduction to Business

Course Description and Expectations: Keyboarding is a prerequisite for this course. A half year course that introduces students to the business world. This course is for students who will be going to college to study business and for students who just want to understand the world of business that surrounds them. Topics to be covered are the economic environment, business operations, business ownership, government involvement in business, ethics, and technology in business.

Keyboarding

Course Description and Expectations: A half-unit course designed for basic keyboarding skill development learning to key by “touch” instead of looking at fingers using the slow, inefficient hunt and peck method. Included with the mastery of the alphabetic keyboard, students will learn proper keying of numbers and symbols. Proofreading and web searches, producing business letters, personal business letters and memos in proper format will be taught. Students will also learn to key reports in MLA in-text style which is the school and state university standard. Also exposure to Microsoft Excel will be included in this course.

Grading Policy: Class work and a final exam will account for 100% of the course grade. The course is graded Pass/Fail, and satisfies the computer requirement for graduation.

Final Exam Weighting: Final Exam counts as 1/5 of total course grade.
Late Work Policy: There is no homework.
Test makeup policy: There are no test during the year, only a final exam.
Extra Credit: No extra credit available.

Microsoft Office

Course Description and Expectations: A half year course on using the Microsoft Office Programs: Word, Excel, FrontPage, and PowerPoint. The course uses projects that students do individually that show the various aspects of each of the programs. Using these programs students will produce a resume, advertising fliers, spreadsheets and charts, web pages and PowerPoint presentations..

Grading Policy: Class work will account for 75% of the grade and final projects 25%.

Final Exam Weighting: Final Exam counts as 1/3 of total course grade.

Late Work Policy:
There is no homework.

Test makeup policy:
There are no test during the year, only a final exam. Final projects must be made up within two days of return from absence.

Extra Credit: No extra credit available.

School Store

Course Description and Expectations: A full year course that runs the school store, Sentinel Supplies. Class time will be spent tracking inventory, updating financial records, special sales campaigns, advertising, board of directors presentations and preparing a newsletter. Store hours are 7:35AM – 7:50AM and during lunch periods 5A, 5B, 6A and 6B. Students will need to have schedules that allow them to work during these time periods.

Grading Policy: Class work will account for 60% of the grade and working in the store 40%.

Final Exam Weighting: Final Exam counts as 1/5 of total course grade.

Late Work Policy:
There is no homework.

Sports Management

Course Description and Expectations: A half year course that introduces the field of Sport Management: from the basic principals of management to emerging issues in sports. The course focuses on intercollegiate and professional sports. Topics covered include sports marketing, facilities planning, accounting & finance in sports, and ethics in sports.

Grading Policy: Opening question 5%, class participation 20%, Classwork/Homework 25%, and tests 50%.
