ENGLISH 12/ADVANCED PLACEMENT 12

Course Descriptions: English 12/AP 12 focuses on the literature, writing and speaking experiences that reflect the important issues of the day. Students are encouraged to creatively and independently analyze and respond to the world around them as it appears in both classical and contemporary art and literature; their English studies will present poems, plays, and novels which explore man’s individuality, man’s treatment of his fellow man, man’s relationship to his natural environment, and man’s social conscience and moral history

In Advanced Placement 12 students are expected to complete more extensive reading and writing. Successful AP testing in May will offer the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school.

Grading Policy: Grading is based on a points system where each assignment is worth points. The “worth” of each assignment is determined by what it demands of the student. When an assignment is given, its point value will be announced. Students should keep a planner of all work assigned and deadlines. Students are responsible for submitting work on time; penalties for late work increase with time.

Homework Policy: Students will be given a variety of homework assignments including reading, writing, and presentation preparation. Some assignments will be long term and others will need to be completed in one night. All assignments are worth credit and need to be accurately completed. All writing work must be word processed and carefully edited.
Senior Project: All seniors are required to successfully complete a Senior Project during the second semester of their senior year. A project requires a research paper, a 20 or more hour independent project and a 15 minute final presentation to a “review board” in June. Seniors are asked to design their own project, work with a mentor, and meet all requirements and deadlines. Grades for each step of the project are part of their English 12 grade..

Grades in PowerSchool are available in 3-5 days for written assignments and tests. Please email me about any concerns or questions about make up work.
