Course requirements and expectations:
This course serves as a bridge into higher level studies and the Regents exam given in grade eleven. Reading, discussion, and writing form the basis for most work. Objective testing lessens comparatively, while expectations that students will steadily increase their independence in reading, note taking and essay writing increase. Occasional quizzes are to be expected along with quarterly exams. A Mid-term and Final Exam are based on the ELA 11 Regents format. Four “ILA’s” or “independent literary analyses” based on independent reading are required of all students. Students keep a working notebook, which contains daily and long term notes and assignments. Major assignments are to be typed (school computers are accessible); students are encouraged to keep a copy of writing assignments on a disk and/or on Class Link.

Grading policy: Grades are weighted by points per assignment with the average taken for marking period grades.

Marking period totals are customarily based on 1000-1500 points.
ILA’s 300 points
Tests, Major essays, Projects 200 points
Quizzes, Smaller assignments, Homework 100 points
Notebook checks 200-400 points

Mid-term & Final Exam Weighting: Mid-Term and Final Exams count for 1/6 each of the final grade when averaged with the four marking periods.

Late Work Policy: Essentially, it is unfair for any student to expect to have more time to complete an assignment than his/her classmates; I prefer to be fair. [IEP considerations aside]

Test make-up policy: Tests and quizzes should be made up within two days of the student’s return. Students should confer with the teacher if a long-term absence or temporary disability is involved.

Homework policy: There is always homework in English 10. Students have class and/or independent reading, writing assignments, notes to take/update, special projects.

Extra Credit: Extra credit is not part of the plan for English 10; regular assignments are considered quite sufficiently demanding for all students.

Grades in Power Grade: Scantron™ quizzes and tests are normally posted within a couple of days. Essays are time consuming to grade and normally appear within a week to ten days.
