Course Description and Expectations:
Biology is the science about living organisms and the living and non-living environment we are a part of. Knowledge of biological concepts will create a better understanding of the world around us and our role in this world.
This course is designed to provide a broad general understanding of the fundamental principles of biology in accordance with the guidelines for the NYS Living Environment Curriculum. Students must perform laboratory work and submit acceptable written lab reports in order to be eligible to participate in the Regents Exam in June. Students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to actively participate in the class each day.
Grading Policy:
Grading is based on a total point system and distribution will vary slightly from marking period to marking period however the weighting of grades is generally in the ballpark of the following. Labs 25% Homework 20% Tests 40% Quizzes 15%
Final Exam Weighting:
Final Exam counts as 1/6 of total course grade. If the final exam grade is higher than the mid-year exam grade, the final exam grade will displace the mid-year exam grade.
Late Work Policy:
All homework assignments are due the next class period unless otherwise stated. Lab Reports are due the next lab period after completion of the lab. Late homework will be accepted throughout the semester at a reduction of 40%. Late Labs are docked 25 points and can be submitted at this deduction all semester long. Labs turned in from a previous marking period are subject to being graded at 50% credit.
Extra Credit: No extra credit available.
Grades in PowerGrade:
Grades will generally be posted within 1 week of due date. Work that is handed in more than a week late is not always subject to the one week grading policy
Homework Policy:
Students will be given homework assignments as a necessary support to the material covered in class. Students can expect a homework assignment on average once a week.
Lab Policy:
Students are required to participate in 1200 minutes of hands on lab work and submit acceptable lab reports before being allowed to take the regents exam. Any student not submitting acceptable lab reports for any given marking period will be given a grad of Incomplete for the marking period.
Enviornmental Science
Course Description and expectations:
Environmental Science - Environmental Science is a blend of Biology and Earth Science that focuses on major environmental issues that are threatening our environment. The ultimate goal of environmental science is to teach about creating and maintaining a sustainable environment. Topics discussed Include, Endangered/Extinct species, water consumption and water pollution, air pollution, biological clocks, alternative energy, Invasive Species and local environmental issues concerning Lake Champlain, Lake George and the Adirondack Park.
Grading Policy:
Grades are based on total points accumulated throughout the semester
Final Exam Weighting:
Final Exam counts as 1/5 of total course grade.
Late Work Policy:
All homework assignments are due the next class period unless otherwise stated. Late work will be accepted throughout the marking period at a 25% deduction of original value

Any student who is absent or does not finish in the allotted class time will have to finish the assignment as homework and due the next day.
