BUSINESS COURSES
If you like being the boss, running your own business, working with people, working for a large or small company, keeping records, using computers, new technologies and setting goals and priorities, a Business sequence might be for you. An Advanced Regents Diploma can be obtained by meeting course requirements that would include a 5-unit sequence in Business to replace the three-year language sequence.

KEYBOARDING I - (1/2 Unit)
This is a half-credit course and satisfies the computer requirement for graduation.
This course is devoted to the mastery of a computer keyboard and basic computer
word processing functions using the Microtype Program. Students will learn to
enhance their learning of the alphabetic, numeric, and symbols of the keyboard.
In addition, students will learn to format letters, envelopes, outlines, memorandums,
tables, and reports in MLA In-Text style.
INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS – (1/2 Unit) (Grades 10-12)
(Fall 2007)
Keyboarding is a pre-requisite for this course - a half-year course that introduces
students to the business world. This course is for students who will be going
to college to study business and for students who just want to understand the
world of business that surrounds them. Topics to be covered: the economic environment,
business operations, business and government in our economy and technology in
business. This course will also participate in the New York Stock Market Simulation
Game.
CAREER & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT - (1/2 Unit) (Grades 10-12)
(Spring 2008)
Keyboarding is a pre-requisite for this course. The purpose of this course is
to provide students with the opportunity to learn about the features of our
economy, explore a variety of careers, and learn the skills and competencies
needed for success in the workplace. Topics covered include Career Planning,
Career Selection Process, Career Success, and Financial Literacy.
SPORTS MANAGEMENT – (1/2 UNIT) (Grades 11-12) (Spring
2008)
A half-year course that introduces the field of Sport Management: from the basic
principals of management to emerging issues in sports. The course focuses on
intercollegiate and professional sports. Topics covered include high school
sports, college sports and professional sports, facilities planning, finance
in sports, and ethics in sports.
ENTREPRENEURIAL OPERATIONS - (1 Unit) (Grades 11-12)
Introduction to Business is a pre-requisite for this course. This is a full
year course devoted to running the school store. Operating the store includes
sales, customer service, financial preparations, inventory control, marketing
and presenting to the board of directors. Students in this course must be able
to work in the store before school and/or during lunch periods 5 and 6.
ACCOUNTING I – (1 Unit) (Grades 11-12)
Introduction to Business is a pre-requisite for this course. This is an introduction
to accounting concepts, theories, principles, and practices as they relate to
a service business. The accounting cycle, journalizing, posting, closing, and
financial statement preparations are studied.
ACCOUNTING II – (1 Unit)
Accounting I is a pre-requisite for this course. This course offers four college
credits toward Accounting I from North Country Community College. The introduction
of additional topics involving more complex accounting applications significantly
extends the basic accounting concepts and skills learned in Accounting I. There
is a fee required for the college credit.
BUSINESS & PERSONAL LAW – (1 Unit) 2007-2008 (Offered
every other year alternating with eCommerce/Marketing.)
This is a course recommended as an elective for students interested in the segments
of law that affect them at home, at work, and at school. If you have thought
about starting your own business, being your own boss, buying your own house,
saving for college, or planning for retirement, you will need to learn and understand
the laws associated with each of these accomplishments. This course will not
only benefit you as an individual, but as a contributing member of your school
and community, and as a part of the world in which we live and work with others.
eCOMMERCE/MARKETING – (1 Unit) 2008-2009
This is a course where students are prepared for the challenges of doing business
in today’s technology-based environment. This course introduces students
to the exciting world of
e-commerce and provides them with the opportunity to acquire basic business,
e-commerce, and general career skills. Personal application, such as on-line
banking and consumer education are covered, as well as Internet marketing, advertising,
security, and global implications. Students learn how to build and maintain
a web site.
MICROSOFT OFFICE – (1/2 Unit) (Grades 11-12) (Fall 2006)
Keyboarding is a pre-requisite for this course. A half-year course that is especially
beneficial to students who will be attending college. This course will be using
the Microsoft Office programs; Word, Excel, Front Page, and PowerPoint. The
course uses projects that students do individually that show the various aspects
of each of the programs. Using these programs, students will product a newsletter,
advertising fliers, spreadsheets, charts, websites and PowerPoint presentations.
