LANGUAGE COURSES

FRENCH 1
This course is required for graduation, if the student is not successful at completing New York State Proficiency Exam. A communicative approach is used to develop all aspects of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Basic language structure and the cultures of Francophone countries are studied.

FRENCH 2
Knowledge of basic French vocabulary and structures is essential. Students will be introduced to more complex structures and topical vocabulary. They will begin developing the necessary reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills for the successful completion of the Regents exam at the end of French 3.

FRENCH 3
The French 3 course works to develop advanced proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing at an in-depth level. High emphasis is placed upon mastery of grammatical structure, vocabulary building, and interactive communication in speaking and listening. French cultural exploration includes the introduction of French art, literature and music. The Regents exam is taken at the end of this course.

A continuation and mastery of complex structure (meaning grammar), and topical vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on reading using authentic publications, listening, writing, and especially speaking. An in-depth study of Francophone cultures is also included.

FRENCH 4

French 4 is the first course in the SUNY at the high school foreign language college credit program, offering the opportunity for 4 college credits upon successful completion of the course and payment of the $120.00 registration fee to SUNY Albany. The course begins study of advanced grammar and analysis of works by Francophone writers and artists. The course also includes critique and evaluation of foreign films and works of poetry. This course is a prerequisite for the SUNY 5 course. Students may also elect to take the course for just high school credit alone if they do not elect to participate in the SUNY program. Placement in the course is based upon teacher recommendation.

FRENCH 5
French 5 is a continuation of the SUNY at the High School Program, and offers the opportunity to receive four more college credits upon successful completion of the course and tuition payment of $120.00 to SUNY Albany. French 4 is a prerequisite to this course. The course is comparable to a freshman college course involving grammar, literature, and writing. Completion of SUNY 4 and SUNY 5 provides the student the opportunity to complete their college foreign language requirement at the high school and enter college with 8 credits in foreign language. Placement in the course is based upon teacher recommendation.

SPANISH 1
New York State curriculum calls for a second language class to be outcome based and to relate communication to every day activities. The focus in Spanish 1 is upon listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This is achieved through emphasis on practical communicative interactions as well as on the grammatical structures required for such interactions. Expectations are high and performance is required.

SPANISH 2
Spanish 2 prepares the second year language student with increased concentration on vocabulary, intermediate grammatical structures, practice in writing and speaking activities and increased development for student listening skills. The course includes exploration of the culture of the Spanish speaking world and moves students toward more fluency and comprehension of spoken Spanish language.

SPANISH 3
The Spanish 3 course works to develop advanced proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing at an in-depth level. High emphasis is placed upon mastery of grammatical structure, vocabulary building, and interactive communication in speaking and listening.
