MISCELLANEOUS COURSES

BOCES VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS - (3 Units Per Year)
Allied Health, Auto Mechanics, Building Trades, Conservation, Cosmetology, Computer Aided Drafting, Early Childhood Education, and Machinist will be offered in 2007-2008. Generally speaking, a student must have attained junior class standing and must be at least 16 years of age on the date of entry into the vocational program. An Advanced Regents Diploma can be obtained by meeting course requirements that would include a 5-unit sequence in vocational studies to replace the three-year language sequence. Students must also attend Ticonderoga High School for daily half-day sessions. See your counselor for details on each course.

DRIVER EDUCATION - (1/2 Unit - 1st and 2nd Semester)
Course objectives for Driver Education are the development of correct driving attitudes, the acquisition of knowledge of traffic laws and regulations, the learning of safe and efficient driving skills and habits, and the ability to recognize, analyze, and respond to traffic situations. This course is offered to students who are at least sixteen (16) years old and is made open to students on an availability and priority basis. The senior student has first priority. First semester students must be sixteen years old on or before September 15. Second semester students must be sixteen years old on or before February 2.

HEALTH - (1/2 Unit )
This course is designed to deal with issues that will affect a person’s entire life. The students will explore a variety of areas, and will gain the knowledge and skills necessary for making good decisions, now and in the future. This course is required for graduation.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - (1/2 Unit)
At the 9-12 grade level, Physical Education experiences gained at lower levels are built upon and expanded. In each of the defined areas of individual and team sports, rhythms and dance, health related fitness, and recreational games, the objectives are to:
- develop high levels of competency skills and knowledge;
- nurture positive attitudes towards movement;
- foster maintenance of optimal physical fitness;
- encourage the development of social and "team" concepts - working together toward a
common goal.
Physical Education is usually taken every other day, each grade level year. This makes a total of 2 credits for this course required for graduation.

ADVANCED PHYSICAL EDUCATION - (1/2 Unit)
Advanced Physical Education is a demanding class designed for student-athletes that wish to increase their personal health fitness while working through a regimented curriculum designed to increase speed, flexibility and athletic movement. Students will learn safe and effective methods to increase their biomotor capabilities through the use of activities that increase strength and speed, agility, balance, and flexibility. All students enrolled in Advanced Physical Education should expect a rigorous class period that is meticulously designed to make them better athletes. A student must have at last a 90 average in physical education from the prior year and/or a recommendation from that physical education teacher to be admitted to Advanced Physical Education.

CHARACTER EDUCATION: THE ESSENTIALS OF SUCCESSFUL LIVING – (1/2 unit)
Character Education is a semester course that will be offered in the fall and spring. It is a recommended elective for Juniors and Seniors.

Character Education will explore the many issues associated with successful living including integrity, honesty, humility, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, motivation, and hard work. Students will have the opportunity to explore and improve on these areas that can lead to successful living.
