I hope this letter finds you and your family well. I have a few updates to share with you.
Memorial Day: In observance of Memorial Day, school will be closed and there will be no instruction on Monday, May 25, 2020. Meals will be delivered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the week of Memorial Day.
Last Day of School: As you know, the Governor’s Executive Orders closed school buildings for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year and mandated that school districts work through previously scheduled breaks including April break. The school year is to be only 180 days long. The following adjustments will be made to our school calendar to ensure we adhere to the 180-day school year:
The last day of school for staff and students for the 2019-2020 school year will be Tuesday, June 16, 2020. This accounts for working through April break, and three unused snow days.
Please keep in mind that we remain in a fluid situation. We will continue to follow Governor Cuomo’s Executive Orders regarding the length of the school year, school closings and anything else which may impact the above. Since the Governor has the authority to adjust the school year, if any future Executive Orders or plans alter this scenario, we will make changes as required. We plan to ask the Board of Education to approve our revised school calendar at its May 20th meeting.
Retrieval of Belongings: We are currently emptying both hall and gym lockers. The contents will be bagged and labeled with the student’s name. The procedure for retrieving these items will be forthcoming in the next week.
Voting: Absentee Ballots will be mailed by the district at the end of May with return envelopes.
Voters must return each ballot in the provided Official Absentee Ballot envelope. Signed/Sealed Absentee Ballot Envelopes may be returned in the provided return envelope included in the mailing. The district will also have a ballot box at the district office to drop off ballots between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, beginning June 1, 2020. On June 9, 2020 the ballot box will be available till 5:00 p.m. All ballots must be received by the District no later than 5:00 P.M. on June 9, 2020.
Graduation: We have a committee working on ideas for graduation. We have heard from many of our Seniors and parents and we want to make the end of their school career memorable. We also received a tremendous amount of support and offers to help with whatever plan is decided. Please know that any final plan must meet State and Public Health Guidelines. The current Pause regulations ban all gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason (e.g. parties, celebrations or other social events) We are anxiously watching these guidelines to see if there will be changes in the next week.
Senior Recognition: Schools in our region will be recognizing the Class of 2020, by turning on the lights and scoreboard at Sentinel Field on June 2, 2020 at 8:20 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes. We ask that if you drive by the field to see the lights, please stay in your car and practice all social distancing requirements set forth by the Governor's Office.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact families and the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program is available to help families identify if they are eligible for SNAP benefits and will assist with completion of your application. Please visit FoodHelpNY.org or use phone number 518-563-4022 for assistance. To apply for benefits, one can apply online at MyBenefits.ny.gov.
We would like you to know we are thinking about you and looking forward to the day this is behind us. We appreciate your support and understanding more than you know.
John W. Donohue
Interim Superintendent of Schools
